Steven R. Smith – “Needle in a Pin Field”

Got a new one from an RSTB favorite and longtime haunter of the site, Steven R. Smith today. Specializing in a harrowing brand of instrumental psychedelia, Smith has been found under the names Ulaan Khol, Ulaan Passarine, Ulaan Markhor, Hala Strana, and has played with Thuja in the past. His latest under his own name heads back to the psych-folk forest that Smith’s quite familiar with, feeling more in line with the Jewelled Antler days than he has in quite a while. Fogged flutes and verdant guitars give “Needle in a Pin Field” a dawn-light quality that opens up as the slight distortion-bend of fiddle takes shape. There’s a kinship with the Scandinavian-progressive set at work here, and though a cold humidity settles onto the track, ultimately it’s a vernal dream shining down through forest lawns with a radiant light. The new album, In The Spires, is out June 4th on Cold Moon Records.
