Simon Joyner – “There Will Be A Time”
Always a favorite around these parts, Simon Joyner returns with a new album rooted in grief. Following the loss of his son in 2022 Joyner sought an outlet for grief and a conduit to process the myriad emotions that orbit its experience. Simon’s work often carries a heavy veil, but on Coyote Butterfly, it’s a bit heavier than usual. The album processes the struggles one faces with regrets and fears, love and lament. Surrounded by a cast of close friends, including David Nance, James Schroeder, Kevin Donahue, Ben Brodin, and Michael Krassner, the album is spare but not sparse. While most of the material on the album picks through the past and the present, there’s some hope among the the batch as well. “There Will Be A Time” keeps its eye on the future, to a time when healing might come. It’s a meditation on reaching understanding rather than just acceptance, a place where the pain finds some resolution. The intimate and confessional new album is out November 22nd from Grapefruit and German label BB*Island.
