Shaki Tavi – “Breaker”

It’s gratifying to hear the new wave of ‘90s musical plunderers heading through the haziest ends of gaze and grunge to find an amalgamation that’s not just rooted in the growl of guitars, but in the era’s fusion of programmed propulsion, obscured atmospheres, and club inflections. The first single from Shaki Tavi clips at Chapterhouse’s murk and motion, reclines in the gauzy glow of Drop Nineteens and Curve, and leaves pop lingering on a knife edge of noise that would make Swervedriver proud. The first single from the upcoming Minor Slip, lets hooks hit among a bluster of breakbeats and a wave of foam that tosses the listener into the undertow of shoegaze. There’s joy at the heart of the song, a feeling of loving losing oneself in the oblivion. It’s dark these days, but sometimes its nice to just squint at the sun and sink into the sound. The band’s new album, Minor Slip is out August 15th from Felte.
