Setting – At Eulogy
North Carolina trio Setting’s debut was a gorgeous record full of folk experiments that unfolded into pulsating seances. While the studio might be able to capture a portion of the band’s magic, live, the group soars, expanding off of their compositions into layered improvisations that find Bowles’s banjo consumed by synth tones and the insistent urge of percussion. The band captured this alchemy late last year with an official live release at the Black Mountain College Museum and they follow that today with a new tape that was recorded during a set at Eulogy in Asheville, North Carolina on June 7th of this year. Like the Black Mountain set, this one finds Setting creating a winding landscape of sound, captured in multitrack glory that makes it as much a headphone record as a match for open speakers.
