Sam Grassie – “Jarabi, Winter Has Gone”
Scottish guitarist Sam Grassie (Avocet) caught my ear with an excellent EP out last year and he follows it with a new single packed with live cuts and demos. “Jarabi, Winter Has Gone,” takes its lyrics from a mix of traditional Celtic and Malian songs, paring them with Sam’s lilting, wind-streaked playing. The song is hung on Grassie’s excellent fingerpicking, but adds bass and piano streaks, pushing the album right into the Pentangle wheelhouse. It’s not surprise that Grassie has worked with The Jansch Foundation on some of his recordings, as his works do feel like an heir to Bert and John Renbourn’s sounds. The single gets a video this week that fits the song into some natural surroundings. The new single is out now from Sam’s Bandcamp.
