Sally Anne Morgan – “I Saw A Heron”

A gorgeous new cut sails in this morning from Sally Anne Morgan (Black Twig Pickers, House and Land). The songwriter’s solo albums compliment her more bluegrass works, but there’s been a cinematic sweep to the songs that have populated the albums under her solitary sign as well. More than any of the others, “I Saw A Heron,” nods to a seamless blend of modern composition and traditional folk, bringing Appalachia to the concert hall and leaving imprints of native plants on the windows and walls. The sounds are vernal, floral, imbued with a fragrance of soil and stalk, flower and field. The song bumps against traditional Eastern hues as much as her own mountain surroundings, letting her fiddle work twist through high winds and low grasses. The album finds Morgan at the helm of a huge list of instruments from fiddle and banjo to guitar and piano, with some other familiar names joining — Geologist on hurdy gurdy, Sean Dunlap on synth, and Joseph Dejarnette on bass. The new album, Second Circle the Horizon is out June 20th from Thrill Jockey.
