Sally Anne Morgan – “Flowers of Shandihar”

Another plaintive stunner slips out from the upcoming new album from Sally Anne Morgan (The Black Twig Pickers, House and Land). Morgan’s solo albums find the songwriter in a contemplative mood, exemplified by album opener “Flowers of Shandihar”. Built on a banjo loop that winds round and round the track in a slow saunter, Morgan’s fiddle weaves between its spaces like breeze through Honeysuckle vines. There’s always been a sweet sense of nature in her works and the new album feels draped in the green hues of humid afternoons. The title, inspired by an archeological dig, muses on ancient peoples found buried with flowers, a connection to nature even in the most hardscrabble times. The new record, Second Circle The Horizon, is out next week, June 20th from Thrill Jockey.
