RVG – “Don’t Take It Badly”

Any new music from RVG is cause for celebration, but the band offers up a new single that pairs an emotional new cut with an inspired take on an old favorite. In true RVG fashion “Don’t Take It Badly” is steeped in the sweep of ‘80s pop, letting chiming leads spill into a rain-streaked solo as Romy Vager lets the listener down easy with a tale of necessary change. The song was recorded with the same crew that helped build the sound on their excellent last outing, Brain Worms. On the flip, the band takes on The Ramones’ “Pet Semetary,” always one of the band’s moodier cuts, but here RVG expands the sound into something towering. With a crash of drums and a fog-thick atmosphere, RVG refashions the cut into one of the more adept adaptations I’ve heard, matching the song’s darkness with deft production. The new single is out now from Fire Records.
