Nightshift – “Crystal Ball”
Trouble in Mind is back with another gem from Glasgow’s Nightshift. “Crystal Ball” finds the band in a much more verdant place than on their last album, sloughing off some of the austere post-punk for a sound that’s draped in atmospherics and a little ennui. Still hung on a lash of guitar angles, the cut retains the band’s penchant for rhythm but laces in some synth support and a wash of humidity. With former drummer Chris White (Spinning Coin) moving to guitar for this album, the textures capture the spirit of Nightshift’s past, but with a few new nuances taking shape. The dryness has receded and the band’s ready for a day in the sun. Despite the slightly dreamy atmosphere, the song leans on themes of political discord and the austerity slide to the right, an all too present worry of late. The new album, Homosapien, is out July 26th from Trouble In Mind.
