Milkweed – “The Pangs of Ulster”

Another dust-covered transmission from UK folk duo Milkweed emanates from the speakers today. The group continues to feed folk through a veil of mangled memories, melting their melodies like thrift store finds given a few minutes under the hot iron. “The Pangs of Ulster” again uses Irish Epic the Táin Bó Cúailnge as its source material, twisting the work’s words though the haze while the band conjures up a haunted music box ambience in the background. Feeling like the listener is grasping for memories that constantly tumble out of reach, the record has a way of turning folklore into figments, carrying the band’s songs away on the scent of candle smoke. The new record, Remscéla is out May 2nd from Broadside Hacks.
