Been meaning to explore this new release from Marissa Nadler, always a favorite around here. As the songwriter embarks on her tenth solo album, she’s long since moved away from the wooded folk of her early days, but she retains a natural spirit throughout her works. Case in point, “Lemon Queen” parallels the resilience of the human spirit with annual blooms of the majestic sunflower, turning towards the light in times of need. The song’s subtle slides and sun-hazed harmonies ache but not sorrowfully. The song has a sly resilience to it that’s not brash, but rather grows slowly like the plant in the title. Her latest LP The Path of the Clouds is out now from Sacred Bones.
