I caught Kassi Valazza’s great 2019 album, Dear Dead Days, a bit late, but it was a lovely introduction to the Portland songwriter. With an EP slipped between the album and where we stand, Valazza returns to the fold with a new single that sets up her shift in direction towards a rougher, dirt-caked sound brought around by backing from TK & The Holy Know-Nothings. The pairing follows her work with fellow West Coast country crooner Taylor Kingman, bringing his band in tow for the single and hopefully for a full long playing treatment in the future.. This past year’s Highway Sounds EP found Valazza in calmer waters, but from the first strains of “Early Morning Rising,” there’s a leaner, ‘70s sound to the song. It’s a sound that feels complimentary to Valazza’s honey and hemp croon, putting this on the new country radar. The single is out now from Fluff and Gravy Records.
