Karl Frog – “Colonial Hearts”

Bringing up the third arm of a trio of albums (I Love Music, Why Music?, and now Yes, Music) underground Canberrian/Estonian musician Karl Frog hops fro Hidiotic to Spoilsport for his latest. Where the first two installments were a bit more bound to the bedroom, the first single from Yes, Music wafts Karl into the arms of ‘70s and ‘80s art pop, feeling like a kindred spirit to David Byrne and Brian Eno (in solo pop guise), though Frog espouses a love for post-Lizzy Phil Lynott and there’s definitely no denying shades from Phil’s boogie-coded solo stint. “Colonial Hearts” bobbles on a rubber band beat, windburned by strings, and splashed with synth. The song dances with the kind of offbeat grace that Byrne made his trademark, and Frog pulls it off nicely. The new record is out July 11th from Spoilsport.
