Joe Harvey-Whyte & Bobby Lee – “Flatbed Alfalfa Run To Pueblo, Colorado, Fall, 1972”
If you’re lucky enough to catch some shows in the UK, Bobby Lee and Joe Harvey-Whyte have been teaming up live for a while now, but until today there hasn’t been anything official in the works. The duo finally reveals a long simmering album with the first single “Fatbed Alfalfa Run To Pueblo, Colorado, Fall, 1972.” Named after a Roberta Price photograph, from her book Across the Great Divide: A Photo Chronicle of the Counterculture, the first cut is steeped in the kind of slow-simmer choogle that Bobby’s been working on for years solo, and that Joe’s helped cultivate in The Hanging Stars. With a chug that passes like white lines on pavement, the song sweeps a sweet autumn breeze through the speakers. The Western expanse rolls out on the horizon, and the sun never seems like it wants to set. A light lapping of Rhodes circles the scene like late afternoon clouds. The interplay between the strings and steel speaks to both players’ skill and it sets up the scene for a full album of Cosmic Americana. The duo’s debut, Last Ride, is on it’s way from Curation Records later on this Spring.
