Horsegirl – “Julie”

The second Horsegirl album is shaping up to be one of the first great indie outings in 2025. The band led off with the stripped-back and buoyant “2468” and follow-up this week with the austere “Julie.” A subtle maturing from their last album, the new single follows suit on “2468,” pulling back on the noise floor for a slow simmer streaked with the sigils of post-punk. A pillow of synth swirls about the speakers over the chug and chirp of guitars, laying a tangled nest for Penelope Lowenstein’s speak-sung secrets. The band pairs the cut with an animated video from Amsterdam-based animator Daphna Awadish Golan. The new album, Phonetics On and On is out February 14th from Matador.
