Hiss Golden Messenger – “Nu-Grape”
Yesterday Hiss Golden Messenger announced a new album on the way from Merge. The record boasts some of M.C. Taylor’s most self-reflective work yet, finding him hunkering down with his compatriot and former Court and Spark/Golden Gunn foil Scott Hirsch behind the boards. Along with the rest of the well-oiled Hiss band, the record boasts guest spots from Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats), Tatiana Hargreaves on fiddle, and Matt Douglas (The Mountain Goats). The first single takes a bit of the piss out of itself in the self-deprecating video, starring Taylor as a soda company shill, but it’s pinned to a slick Americana groove and Stones-gone-Memphis feel that vaults it into the thick of the band’s catalog bests. The new record, Jump For Joy, is out August 25th.
