Emergency Group – “Crisis In Mono”

One of the records that’s been lighting up the speakers constantly around here has been the debut tape from Emergency Group. The outfit’s excellent cassette on Island House has been a favorite and as a Bandcamp Friday treat there’s a whole batch of recordings from the first night the group played together as a full quartet, with Dave Mandl joining them on bass for the session. The sound hints at what’s to come on Inspection of Cruelty. There are still the nods towards Miles and McLaughlin, but there’s a rawer propulsion to the set, something rooted in Neu and Can that’s more prevalent here than it would be on the following works. Crisis In Mono will also serve as a fundraiser for the band’s upcoming full length, with plans to record with Chris Schlarb later in the year. Help ’em out because I really want to hear that happen!
