Eli Winter – “Cracking The Jaw”
A new work from an old favorite around here. Eli Winter’s last couple of albums have only further embedded the artist as one of the best of the new fingerpicked frontline. His last LP pushed much further from the soli and Americana templates and it looks like Winter isn’t finished with that evolution just yet. The first single from his upcoming album, A Trick of the Light, finds the Chicago guitarist at the helm of a larger ensemble than ever before. Backed by excellent players like Andrew Scott Young (Ryley Walker, Circuit Des Yeux), Tyler Damon (Tashi Dorji) and Sam Wagster (The Cairo Gang, Bill MacKay), the song traces the restrained chaos that the quartet fostered in the studio. It’s darker, more contorted than his past works, and certainly in line with the Chicago school of fusion that’s birthed so many favorites. The album boast quite a few other familiar names as well, including David Grubbs and Mike Watt. The new album is out May 2nd from Three Lobed. The new video captures the song’s cathartic snap above.
