Dummy – “Nine Clean Nails”
A second single snakes out from Dummy’s upcoming new LP, Free Energy. Hooked on the band’s penchant for propulsion, “Nine Clean Nails,” keeps the body moving and pushes their sound away from the haze of some of their past work and into the dazzling light. With Emma’s vocals upfront, riding synth fizz and wrapped around tensile bass, the cut finds Dummy as catchy as they’ve ever been. The cut explodes into a dayglo din that pushes towards pop, but leaves their scuffs and scrapes in tact. The single feels like it’s siphoning just enough gas from the past while shuffling influences into a modern tsunami of sound that could only happen at this particular moment — a vision of the future as scratched out by pop sages scrying through cracked magic 8-balls.
The single comes with a new video in tow, created with the help of Katie Ryan. In the first person POV of the clip, Ryan explains, “I think the character in the video is trying to make sense of those opposites: the nature, and trash as a symbol of its degradation by humans. It’s beautiful and disgusting. For me the character is looking for an alternative to anger about this, maybe something closer to compassion. The LA river feels like a symbol of resilience because it’s born of those opposites.” The new record features a few RSTB faves in the mix, with Cole Pulice and Jen Powers (Powers/Rolin Duo) cropping up among the grooves on Free Energy. The new album is out September 6th from Trouble In Mind.
