Dope Purple – “Night Flying”

There’s always a wealth of psychic damage emanating out of the Pacific Rim, a tradition that continues with the new record from psychedelic dealers Dope Purple. The Taiwanese band brought in two guests for the sessions leading up to the new album; saxophonist Yong Yandsen from Malaysia and British drummer Darren Moore from Singapore. The resulting record is dunked in midnight hues, scratched and singed by the furious desperation of Yandsen’s sax lines. It’s engulfed in a billowing atmosphere of oil barrel smoke. “Night Flying” pairs doom laden guitars with the banshee wails of sax that claw at the record, a frantic fusion of psych and free jazz impulses. The new record, Children In The Darkness, is out now from UK label Riot Season.
