Quite a nice first peek into this collaborative album from Dawn Richard and Spencer Zahn. The album diverges from Richard’s complex R&B. Pigments straddles avant jazz and ambient works with the help of Chris Forsyth collaborator Spencer Zahn. The first movement is released today, building slowly into the morning light. Hushed woodwinds and synths ease the listener through “Coral,” before “Sandstone” lets in Dawn’s vocals soaring over the effusive clouds with a disembodied euphoria tinged with sadness. The piece, about finding oneself through dance, self-expression, and the comfort of community ends with a video for “Vantablack” featuring a dance student from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). The new record is out October 21st from Merge Records.
