BASIC – “Tension Envelope”

Following quickly on their album from last year, Philly’s BASIC are back with a new EP of rhythm-wracked guitar chuggers. Following a mid-tour lineup change, Dream City reflects the band’s current configuration with Douglas McCombs (Tortoise) propping up the third corner of the triad and adding bass in place of the first LP’s Baritone Guitar. The vibe shifts a bit, wafting closer to broken blues filtered through a No Wave and African pop puree. The new EP feeds off of the band’s recent live energy, reflecting their nocturnal neon flicker off the oil stains in the pavement. The band offers up the new EP with the promise of more dates, taking a run at the North and Southeast to accompany the new cuts. The new EP is out now from No Quarter.
