Zelma Stone – “Gift Horse”

Avatar

The slow simmer of Zelma Stone’s “Gift Horse” builds from the moment it flickers to life. Over an arid guitar line, the band’s Chloe Studebaker lays out an incantation on grace, acceptance, and mindfulness. With the gravity of scarred songwriters of late like Rosali, Leah Senior, or Grace Cummings, “Gift Horse” plays up its understated nature until the song erupts on the chorus in a deluge of harmonies and fuzzed leads. The video’s rural setting captures the pastoral grit of the track, bathing it in golden hour hues. As the track leans into the drama of cacophony at its end, we all slump to the floor with Chloe, exhausted but exorcised. The band’s new EP is out August 20th.
