Workhorse – “Mary Maiden”

Avatar

I mentioned this cover when writing up Workhorse’s lovely new album last month. Harriet Fraser-Barbour reinterprets the Joan Baez tune “River In The Pines,” and dubs it “Mary Maiden.” Her cover re-imagines the song as a Fairport/Pentangle-style Anglican folk ballad that feels like it may have existed in canon for 50 years already. The song gets a Ren Faire workup in the video, which feels quite appropriate. Baez’ original is a sparse, lonesome take, and some of the mournfulness remains, but Fraser-Barbour thickens up the ambience. Stacked harmonies wet with rain, dour fiddles, and a cavernous jangle of guitars give her take a lovely ache all its own. The new album is out now on Dinosaur City Records.
