Tinariwen – “Kek Alghalm”

Avatar

There’s been such a barrage of necessary new music these days, its easy to miss a true gem among the ranks. Tinarwen have a new album on the way, Amatssou, which marks the band’s ninth outing. Featuring Nashville’s Wes Corbett on banjo, “Kek Alghalm” feels like a fresh take on the band’s signature sound. The new album was recorded with Daniel Lanois, and it pairs the band’s snaking desert blues with a classic country saunter as Lanois adds pedal steel and fiddle to the mix, letting the Tourareg and Tennessee mix in surprising symbiosis. The song is an anthem of hope, a call to the Tourareg masses to shake off persecution among Mali’s ongoing political and social turmoil. The new album is out May 19th on Wedge.
