Thee Oh Sees – “Block of Ice (Live at Austin Psych Fest)”

Levitation digs a classic set out of history for their 8th entry Into the Live at Levitation series. Following shows from Kikagaku Moyo, The Black Angels, Primal Scream, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Moon Duo, Psychic Ills, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the label has pressed up the very first appearance of Thee Oh Sees at Austin Psych Fest in 2012. The band, in prime form, tears into a 12+ minute version of “Block of Ice” from The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In, bathing the crowd in a cloud of exhaust and electricity. I remember seeing the band just few years prior at a Woodsist/ Sacred Bones block party, scattered in a dust-filled lot, and the band shook the train tresses overhead. That same energy comes through in the accompanying film for “Block of Ice” with the band riding crest after crest of sweat n’ singe until the collapse. The performance features a classic Oh Sees lineup with the addition of Lars Finberg (The Intelligence) as second drummer. Live at LEVITATION is out May 19th from Reverberation Appreciation Society.
