Sonny and the Sunsets – “Ring My Bell”

Well its damn good to see Sonny Smith back in country mode, hearkening back to the Lonesome Companion days with a new song and a new album in the same heavy-hearted hues. Smith decamped to a rural studio with initial intentions to use the time painting, but instead began to ruminate on songs about solitude, a rather fitting focus for these times. The album that would come out of the sessions is streaked with the same Sunsets charm that usually permeates his works, giving some levity to the notion of being alone. The track features some ace pedal steel from Joe Goldmark, who shades in Sonny’s tale of love at odds. While its a song about loneliness, its still got a lot of fun to it, winking at the narrator’s troubles rather than ruminating on them. The upcoming album, New Day With New Possibilities, is out July 30th via Sonny’s own Rocks In Your Head Records.
