Shrapnel – “Orpheum Protocol”

Avatar

Another gem out of the Tenth Court stable lands this week with the latest from Australia’s Shrapnel. The song mixes a jangled indie with a strain of ‘60s psych-folk that feels like Sapphire Thinkers teleported from ’68 to ’88 to work out a single for Flying Nun. The strident strums give way to iced flutes and woodwinds, twisting into a quick baroque stab, but never quite committing to a full Fairport fealty. Instead its just a knowing flash, a wink before the groove reappears and the song is thrust back into the arms of the indies once again. I’m definitely interested to see how the rest of this shakes out, but its an excellent leap into Alasitas, which lands June 11th.
