Marisa Anderson – “The Fire This Time”

Avatar

Another great peek into the upcoming Marissa Anderson album lands this week with a darker turn. “The Fire This Time” finds the guitarist paying homage to Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time. Written in the wake of the George Floyd murder, the song is an appropriately somber take, filled with a foreboding darkness. Her fluid fingerpicking is offset by mournful pedal steel that pushes past the sunny country comforts of the instrument and instead leans into a resonant howl of collective hurt and anxiety. Her new album Still, Here is out September 23rd from Thrill Jockey.
