Mapache – “People Please”

Sam Blasucci’s keeping busy this year, with a solo release already on the schedule, he and Clay Finch return with a new Mapache album out at the end of the Summer as well. The first single, “People Please,” finds the band reclining in the full splendor of their Canyon Country impulses. Reflecting the charms of the Super 8 grain in the accompanying video, the cut is worn-in and relaxed with a classic air. Though this time around the band finds their sound swelling as well, straying from the off-the-cuff recordings that marked their early works. That shift may well be due to the band’s decision to move the sessions to Northern California artist residence Panoramic House. The weeklong residency helped the band focus and flesh out the album into its final form, isolated from the world among the natural beauty of their surroundings.

Adding a rolling piano to their usual strums n’ drums, the new single focuses on taking control of your narrative. “Some people talk your life into a corner in the name of god or religion, notes the band, “but you can talk your life back with whatever vocabulary you feel inside. It’s just about playing how you feel.” The new album, Swinging Stars, features contributions from the Allah-Lahs’ Spencer Dunham and David Rawlings (Gillian Welch, Norah Jones) and arrives August 18th from Innovative Leisure.
