Jeff Tobias – “Self-Portrait In A Convex Mirror”

An unexpected swerve in direction from Jeff Tobias (Sunwatchers, Modern Nature, The Mothers Network) as he slides into a solo outing of synth-pop. With a new wave burble and bittersweet shading, the song pushes away from some of the more experimental settings in which I’m used to encountering Tobias, finding himself in unlikely company with Business of Dreams, Minks, or Wild Nothing. “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror” arrives on a lightly shuffling beat with synths sparkling around Tobias’ sax, which has been tempered from its usual scorch to an ‘80s gloss. While it was mostly a self-recorded album, finding Jeff tackling a wide array of instruments he surrounds himself with friends, boasting contributions from Max Katz (USAISAMONSTER), Amirtha Kidambi(Seaven Teares), Jason Robira (Sunwatchers), Jordan McLean (Antibalas) and more.
