High Alpine Hut Network – “727”

Avatar

Some excellent psych-jazz news tumbles down the chute this week with the introduction of new Canadian imprint Ansible Editions. The label is an offshoot of RSTB faves Idée Fixe. The label barrels into the room with three sizable releases as their introduction, including a trio that pairs up members of Cosmic Range for a trio — Kieran Adams, Matthew “Doc” Dunn, and Andy Haas — The Brodie West Quintet (a co-release with Astral Spirits,) and High Alpine Hut Network. The latter might be marked as my favorite of the bunch, featuring members of IF regulars Possum and Bart. The first cut from the album, “727″ mixes dubbed electronics with charred sax, and deeply dosed synth and guitar. The song picks up the littered freakouts from the fringes of Possum and lets them grow into ten-foot titans. This one should fit nicely alongside that Fusione release out on Black Sweat earlier in the year — real deep level fever-sweat psych-jazz crust that needs to be felt. The whole batch hits shelves in March. Heads already tuned to Astral Spirits and Black Sweat should take note here.
