Grave Flowers Bongo Band – “Sweeter People”

Avatar

I’m not gonna lie, this song has been stuck in my head since the moment it crept into my life. Melding a classic riff that evokes “Over The Hills And Far Away,” with a baked-in dose of cosmic country, “Sweeter People” picks up nicely from where Grave Flowers Bongo Band left off on last year’s Strength of Spring. Honey-soaked slides balance that acoustic ramble and the song becomes the kind of cool off that begs for the next cut to careen into full force glam stomp. The song has a rumpled ease, a feeling that its been in your head for years just waiting to pop through. We’re all hanging in that smoke-curled sunshine that Gabe and the band conjure up and its a very good place to be. The last album found them stepping further from their folk-fed Bolan beginnings, and with this taste of the next, the boys in Bongo seem to be carving out their own stake at classic status. Ty Segall steps back into the producer’s chair, a perfect fit given a few of the touchstones here, and the accompanying clip for the video was directed by Cooper Kenward. Pick up the single now and keep perked for what’s to come from Grave Flowers Bongo Band this year.
