Dummy – “Mono Retriever”

Avatar

While the label often keeps the press and fanfare around their yearly singles series low-key, I’ve always found Sub Pop’s choices in this ongoing venture to be some of their most inspired. After an excellent single from longtime RSTB fave Matthew ‘Doc’ Dunn the label announces one from West Coast propulsive-pop outfit Dummy. The band’s debut for Trouble In Mind was a kaleidoscopic pop journey last year and one of my favorite albums to get lost in for 2021. This double shot follows nicely on what made Mandatory Enjoyment such a gem. The A side clips right back into that locked-drum motor that pushed so many of their past singles — tumbling and twisting through the vortex of sound with a brightly colored glee. The flip finds the band turning down the turbulence but never loosing their pop sensibility. It’s a more languid side of the band, billowing in the dream fog that laps at synth pop and shoegaze’s shores, but still keeping a softly murmuring spirit just beneath the clouds. The new single is out now!
