Danny Arakaki – “Crosswalk Heat”

A second single slips out from the upcoming Danny Arakaki record and it finds the Garcia Peoples’ songwriter in a softer spot. With violin from Rachel Herman and rain-soaked piano from Winston Cook-Wilson, the cut eschews Danny’s usual guitar flash for a tender exploration of his writing. The song builds, billowing into a windswept second half that balances the strings with Mike Bones’ slow churn of fuzz. The Peoples have been riding the gnarled edge for a long time but have let themselves show a bit of the soft underbelly as well, still, it’s nice to see Danny stretching into new territory on his solo debut. The album, Tumble In Shade, is out January 20th on Husky Pants.
