Tapani Rinne & Juha Mäki-Patola – Brevity

Hanging in the air like condensation, the opening track from Finnish duo Tapani Rinne & Juha Mäki-Patola’s album, Open, is patient and contemplative. Straddling the intersection between ambient auras and jazz minimalism, the pair creep into the room, tracing the lines of every object with a studied gaze. The song has a feeling of absorbing the atmosphere around oneself and, paired with the tactile video of Ilkka Kärkkäinen’s letterpress work, the video itself becomes a balance between ambience and field recording, picking up the satisfying clack of his machinery behind the pair’s flanneled sax.
