Beautify Junkyards and Belbury Poly – “Painting Box”

Avatar

Never a disappointment from the crew over at Ghost Box. This time Belbury Poly and Beautify Junkyards team up for a collaborative single that pairs a cover of The Incredible String Band’s “Painting Box” with a Junkyards original on the flip. For the cover, Belbury’s Jim Jupp washes away the song’s simple folk roots for a more hollowed sound, with cavernous atmospheres housing anguished strings awash with tones degraded by the static crunch of synths. The vocals are painted across the cut in bold colors, as the song’s message might imply. The two bands turn the precious original into a darker, yet hopeful take that recasts the ISB in a light of magical realism. The flip houses a new track from Beautify Junkyards that continues the psychedelic folk of Cosmorama from earlier in the year. It’s a lovely pairing that’s stays true to the Ghost Box hauntological staples.
