Al Doum & The Faryds – “Freaky People”

Avatar

I’m definitely going to have to crack into this one in full, but for now this is too good not to bring up and share. Italian psych unit Al Doum & The Faryds have slipped out a new album with no lead-up today. The band’s last record Spirit Rejoin was a constant favorite around here when it was released last year and this one sneaks in just under the wire for 2021, proving yet again why you can’t clamp down those year-end faves before everything materializes, especially in the year of the constant delay. The album is packed with excellent cuts — rollin’ on polyrhythms, horns, and ecstatic vocals that lift up to the heavens — but the title track sums up the slight shift in direction quite nicely. Where the last album held onto a bit of darkness, “Freaky People” is all celebration and light. There’s a cosmic ripple in the guitars and as this track builds to a climax it’s hard not to hear some of the same seeds of Agitation Free meets West Coast psych that’s been fueling Garcias, Tonstartssbahnt, WEEED and others this year. The track bubbles over with a palpable positivity and its much appreciated right about now. The album’s out now digitally, but word of CD/LP is apparently coming soon according to the band’s socials. Highly Recommended!
